BullyProofing Your School
BPYS is a curriculum that provides a 'blueprint" for teaching school-age children about bullying and how to deal with bullying situations. The goal is to make the school environment safe for children, both physically and psychologically. This program, created by mental health providers here in the Cherry Creek School District, is a model used throughout the country. The basic components of this program include the following:
BullyProofing Rules
1. We will not bully others.
2. We will help others who are being bullied by speaking out and getting adult help.
3. We will use extra effort to include ALL students in activities at our school.

HA HA SOWhat to do If You are Being Bullied
Help- Get help from friends or adults. Assert Yourself-Use your words to tell the person to stop. Humor-Use humor to de-escalate the situation. Avoid-Walk away or avoid certain places in order to avoid bullying situations. Self Talk-Say good things to yourself. Own It-"Own" the put down or negative comment it order to diffuse it. |
CARESWhat to do if You See Someone Else Being Bullied
Creative Problem Solving-Get involved in solving the probem. Adult Help-Find an adult for help. Relate and Join-Join and support the person being bullied. Empathy-Try to understand the feelings of the victim and share that understanding with them. Stand Up and Speak Out-Take a stand against bullying by speaking out when you see it occur. |
Students are instructed in how and when which strategies are appropriate. Sometimes this involves group work and role playing. In situations that are dangerous or someone could be hurt, students are asked to get help from adults immediately. For other "less serious" situations, students are encouraged to try other strategies before getting help. These skills give students a great sense of independence and confidence. BPYS empowers our Caring Majority of students to do what they know is right.
Tattling vs. Telling
Students learn to understand the difference between the two when it comes to bullying situations.

In addition to the above School-Wide Instruction, small group or individual skill lessons are available for students engaging in the bullying behaviors as well as the students who have a tendency to be the victim.
Character Counts!
Partnering with parents in helping the development of their child's character is an important role for schools. CHVE celebrates this opportunity by using the Character Counts! education-based character program. Character Counts! is the nation's largest program of this kind. The goal of this program is to instruct in and reinforce positive character traits based on the Six Pillars of Character.
Trustworthiness- Be honest, loyal and reliable.
Respect- Treating others the way we want to be treated. Be considerate of the feelings of others. Be tolerant of differences. Deal peacefully with anger and frustration.
Responsibility- Do what you are supposed to. Persevere. Exercise self-control and think before you act. Always be accountable for your own choices, don't blame others.
Fairness- Play by the rules. Take turns and share. Listen to others points of view. Don't take advantage of others.
Caring- Be kind and compassionate. Express gratitude and help others in need. Be forgiving.
Citizenship- Do your share to make your school and community a better place. Stay informed, get involved. Be a good neighbor and respect authority. Obey laws and rules. Protect the environment.
At CHVE, we devote one month to each pillar in the form of announcements, writing prompts, classroom meetings, reading assignments and creative activities. Students demonstrating excellent character traits are recognized publicly.

Problem Solving Coaching
We can all expect to encounter problems on a daily basis. Children need a blueprint for solving their problems in constructive and productive ways. At CHVE we help the students to understand that they have the means and power to solve many of their own problems. The basic format taught directly to our students is simple and logical.
1. Stop and Calm Down
2. Identify the Problem and Feelings
3. Make a Plan
4. Evaluate the Outcome of the Plan
These skills are taught directly, in each classroom, during Caring Community Meetings. Students have the opportunity to learn about and practice solutions for various problems in relation to school, friends, home and community.
